The one piece of information I wish someone had given me as soon as Jesse and I got engaged is that the days leading up to the wedding will be some of the worst in your entire relationship.

We as Christians are so uncomfortable with discomfort that we no longer want to walk alongside real people or sit with the real issues that they’re dealing with – we want them to be healed overnight, be delivered from addiction overnight, be happy always, stop being sad, stop grieving.

New Chapter

11 years ago, I played an April Fools’ prank on my Facebook friends by posting a picture of my friend Kristine’s engagement band. Believing that I had gotten engaged, hundreds of friends, relatives, and acquaintances, some of whom I hadn’t heard from in a long time, poured into the comment section with messages of congratulations and celebration.

I decided to register for the first time since 2004. I’ve become largely cynical and jaded about democracy, and often actively removed myself from political discussions for many years. I didn’t see any difference in the lives of those in the most vulnerable parts of the country from the time I was a child until I finally left for greener pastures. I was fortunate enough to be born into a middle-class family. My privilege allowed me to be apolitical because, to be honest, whoever was in office didn’t really affect my everyday life.

And There Was Light

I didn’t feel much like celebrating Christmas this year. I’d spent the last few months a little dejected, a little bit adrift and unsure of where I was supposed to be, and the holidays are always difficult when I’m away from my family.
